Shanklin Post Office, located in the Regent Street Branch of the Co-Op palyed host to Thursdays’ roadshow event, attracting customers from the store and post office.
Volunteers were on hand to help listen to and record the views of townsfolk, as well as advise them on Ukonline facilities in the town, and on the Island, including the Riverside Centre (which featured on a live edition of the BBC South Today Programme yesterday, Wednesday).
Visitors to the roadshow commented on how pleased they were to be asked for their views and how some of the pictures brought back memories of their childhood.

Community Centre Networking Day
The Seaside Voices Roadshow celebrated pancake day with a networking day at the community centre.
Using fully accessible equipment and software people were helped to surf the web and talk about their expereinces and views.
Members of the public expressed comments on the blog and asked for future events in Shanklin, as well as for the opportunity to use other state of the art equipment, in addition to learning new skills at courses offered on line at the centre.

Shanklin families are making the most of half term by attending the roadshow, and using the exhibition as a fun fact finding opportunity.
Local residents, and visitors to the Town, have expressed a great deal of interest in the artefacts and use them to trigger memories and current thoughts.
Visitors have been surprised to discover that Keats was a resident in the Town, with fellow poets Tennyson, Swimburne, Manley and Longfellow also linked to the seaside resort – in addition to writers such as Marx, Darwin and Dickens (who lived along the coast in Bonchurch).

The Seaside Voices Roadshow arrived in Shanklin during Valentines weekend, and Shanklin Library played host to a launch event that attracted over 60 visitors, and included an exhibition of Shanklin pictures from the previous two centuries.
The Roadshow will take in the local voluntary youth and community centre, local Co-op and Post Office, and Paramount Restaurant for an event with the Shanklin Afternoon Townwomen’s Guild.

Alan Titchmarsh presents volunteers from Shanklin Youth Centre with the Hampshire and IW Youth Centre of the Year Award
TV Presenter and Isle of Wight Resident, and former High Sheriff, presented Shanklin Voluntary Youth and Community Centre with a regional award for their work with UKOnline to develop a resource for local young people and the wider community, he also presented a green pennant for their environmental project and garden.
The Centre is actively involved in seaside voices, and several current members’ families have been involved in the Centre for over 50 years – their comments will feature in the project, which involves local schools and the wider community.

Players Dougie Stephens and Paul Biddlecombe receive awards from High Sheriff and FA Representative
Shanklin VYCC Footballers Dougie Stephens and Paul Biddlecombe received awards from the FA for playing Island Saturday League Soccer for six decades, at a presentation attended by the Island’s High Sheriff.
They also received congatulatory messages from former Saints forward Matt Le Tissier, specially commissioned shirts, and an anniversary cake.
The event formed part of the Seaside Voices project, which highlights the range of sporting activities in the town, and the pedigree of success seen locally, from 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist Louis Attrill, to Shanklin Cricketer Wally Hammond.

TV Comedian Jimmy Carr adds support to Shanklin Project
Shanklin’s seaside voices project gained momentum when TV Comedian added his support for the initiative, which includes capturing memories of Shanklin residents enjoyment of acts at Shanklin Theatre, and former Theatres on the Pier and along the Esplanade.
The forthcoming Roadshow will enable local people and tourists to comment on issues affecting them, as well as record memories of their expereinces of the town as it has developed.

Martin Adams, 2010 World Champion, seen at Shanklin Voluntary Youth Centre
Martin Adams was at Shanklin Voluntary Youth Centre to open the activity suite at the Centre and highlight the range of games and facilities available. Martin, with Mervyn King, met members and played several games before going on to another venue in the town. He said that he would ask Bobby George to pop along in the future to see how things were going.
